The Clinic for Public Defender’s Office

The Public Defender's Office operates under the Public Defender Law and is responsible for providing appropriate legal representation to defendants and suspects who are entitled to receive the assistance of a public defender, i.e., a lawyer whose salary and expenses are paid by the state. Among the prominent population types that the defense attorney represents are the disadvantaged, minors, and mentally or mentally impaired. The clinic combines theoretical lessons and practical work.

As part of the theoretical section, we will discuss the dilemmas faced by the defense attorney, as they arise from case law, legislation, professional literature and various films that illustrate these dilemmas. We will also discuss the areas of conduct of criminal proceedings, the rights of defendants and suspects, and the professional and ethical obligations of defense attorneys.
As part of the practical work, each student is “attached” to a lawyer, who represents defendants and detainees in criminal cases on behalf of the Public Defender’s Office in the various courts. During the academic year, the student accompanies the lawyer and assists him in his work, in a wide range of tasks. Among other things, the student accompanies the lawyer to court hearings, meetings with defendants and prosecutors, and assists him in preparing the defense of suspects and defendants.
The research seminar deals with the structure of the criminal justice system and the limitations on its ability to achieve its goals. The seminar focuses on the criminal process for minor offenses. The hearings deal with the implications of detention on the process, the prosecution’s discretion, reading days, judicial mediation and plea bargains.
