The Clinic for Legal Feminism

The Clinic for Legal Feminism examines how Israeli society, which is perceived as a modern, democratic and egalitarian society, relates to women living in it in different contexts.

Have we really come a long way when it comes to women’s rights and advancing gender equality? Or is it an illusion of modern liberal society? And what is the role of law on the road to equality? We will try to answer the questions through theoretical examination and through practical activity on various topics, such as: women in the workplace, protection against sexual assault in the public sphere, economic violence, treatment of women in family court, and more.
As part of the clinic, students are exposed to entrenched policies, mechanisms and customs that cause infringement of women’s rights both from the point of view of academic writing and from the perspective of what is happening “on the ground”.
Students at the clinic take part in public struggles of women’s organizations and use the legal tools to promote issues related to women’s rights.
The theoretical session, led by Dr. Ariane Renan-Barzilai, will present a variety of feminist theories of law, focusing on the unique contribution of each to the development of critical and conscious feminist discourse, while highlighting the dilemmas and challenges facing the promotion of gender equality.
Adv. Vardit Avidan, a feminist activist lawyer who works to promote women’s rights through law, will guide the practical activity, which will connect theory to the practical, social and legal world and examine the actual impact of feminist theories.
